I joined a Sierra Club Action Hour meeting where we wrote letters to the editors of our local newspapers and drafts for editorials. Our goal was to build the public pressure needed to hold data centers accountable.
During the 1 hr meeting, they walked us through the process and even gave us time to write it during the stream. I did not write it for a whole 5 days but I did. Then I emailed the host to let her know. I will keep you updated on what comes next!
This is what i wrote:
“I urge local leaders to demand strict accountability for data centers. Too many are popping up simply to keep pace with the ongoing tech race. Whoever dominates this new technology stands to win massive rewards—both accolades and wealth—while everyday people are forced to bear the pollution and negative impacts of their success.
Climate progress was already slow, but we have now reached a point where it is difficult to remain optimistic. As a member of Gen Z, I used to be hopeful about my generation's future, but now that hope feels increasingly out of reach. I thought clean energy was bustling, but AI data centers have completely overpowered its potential.
There is a very simple solution, and we must take the first step. Help my generation hold these data centers accountable. We must push our leaders to implement laws that protect vulnerable communities from the negligent and exploitative nature of those who impose these facilities on us. We need regulations for data centers just as much as we need them for wildlife preservation, taxes, and every other structure of life that keeps society safe and protected.”
When I clicked submit, I received no confirmation email. That was odd. I hope they fix that.
But wait!
I would like to express my initial reluctance. I feared that this could possibly be another method for obtaining emails through a campaign that lures you in with your desire to be helpful and contribute to a worthy cause, only for it to end up being a ploy to harvest your email for unrelated matters. Considering that the Sierra Club has been around for some time and has some transparent reports, I decided to give this simple thing a try.
I even took a look at their 2027 Data Center Guardrails State Legislative Menu. In this menu, quite a delicacy..
What is the Action Hour?
If you recently received an email prompt or attended a Sierra Club "Action Hour", you likely saw a call to action asking members to use their digital submission portal. This tool automatically matches an individual’s zip code to their local newspapers and supplies a pre-written template about the environmental risks of rapid AI data center expansion
Is the broader campaign making a difference?
The letters to the editor are one small piece of a much larger pushback strategy. Paired with public awareness campaigns, the Sierra Club’s legal and grassroots actions have achieved tangible results:
Legal Victories: In late October 2026, a Sierra Club lawsuit successfully forced a legal settlement with Vantage Data Centers and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, requiring a massive, comprehensive state evaluation of AI data center impacts. [1]
Global Political Alignment: This grassroots momentum fueled a historic milestone where 40 major global mayors (including Phoenix, Chicago, and Miami) signed the Urban Data Centres Pact to legally restrict data center growth from cannibalizing local water and power grids.
This is what I know
How The Sierra Club Letter Templates Are Helping
I found a different template to use; however, this one is about oil and gas companies. https://www.sierraclub.org/write-your-letter-editor
You can write your AI DATA CENTER opposition letter using their template here.
I think it is also important to know who the editors for each department are for the Buffalo News.
Their worksheet gave a bit more instruction.
I would like to see a bit more transparency on where our emails are actually going.
